For sheer variety over the twelve years we have been going there, the Starfighter Rock n Roll Club has had it all for us. But as I hinted last month, this is the club that is closing at the end of the year. It’s just so sad for us, however all is not lost as the last four gigs of 2017 are being honoured, and every other month in 2018 will host a record hop, with a big live act toward the end of that year.
For the present though, it was the Valvetones down from the North East playing live. Andy Williams and his trusty Guild guitar, has visited the club and indeed East Anglia on several occasions, sometimes under the guise of Some Like It Hot. This latest trio, were new to us, and in typical Andy Williams fashion, were spot on throughout a top set of rockin’ tunes. Most of it, you’d know I’m sure, the likes of ‘Sixteen Chicks’, ‘Just Thought I’d set You Straight, ‘Long Black Shiny Car’ and ‘Goodbye Goodbye’, strollers including ‘All Night Long’ and ‘The Way I Walk’, and surf instros akin to ‘Run Chicken Run’.
True it was a small crowd in, but those diehard loyalists enjoyed a well presented brace of sets by one of the scenes most dependable performers.
On stage, the Jets, with The Rocking Man, Paul Squires on the decks. Such is the conducive nature of this venue for dance, it was a good job we had a DJ in touch with the crowd, mixing up the finest from the fifties with today’s music. Cracking sets by the ‘Man.
The place was just about full, we noticed glancing around, as the Jets took the stage, bringing everyone out onto the floor with Jack Earls’ ‘Slow Down’. There then followed a brace of sets choc full of everything. There was the must haves ‘Love Makes the World Go Round’ and ‘Yes Tonight Josephine’ along with ‘Rockabilly Baby’ from nineteen hundred and frozen to death.
‘When the Cat’s Away’, ‘You Just Don’t Know How To Treat Your Man’, ‘Millionaire Hobo’, ‘Get It On’ the seldom heard ‘I’m Just a Score’, the anthemic audience participation tune ‘Fine Fine Fine’, you name it, it was there. All of it delivered in typically professional Jets fashion on a first class night out for us in the Midlands.
We'll see you out on the dancefloor somewhere.
Cheers til next time
